Let the MPs know what you think
It is crucial that Auckland National Party MPs hear our message. Labour will vote for the Bill. I hope Greens and Maori Party will too. But if we got some National MPs to vote for it, we could pass it into law. We need these MPs to know that the people of Auckland want their community assets protected.
We have made it as easy as possible for you to get your voice heard by providing this email template. Send this to your Member of Parliament today. It only takes a minute and the more voices that are heard, the better. If you dont want to email you can send a letter to your MP, Parliament Buildings, Wellington (no stamp required).
If you can re-write the text below in your own words, including your own views on this issue, that would make it even more powerful.
Dear <MP name>,
I urge you to vote for Phil Twyford's private member's bill The Local Government (Protection of Auckland Assets) Amendment Bill.
I am concerned that Auckland's assets, paid for by generations of Aucklanders through their rates, could be at risk of privatisation under the new super city.
The Minister of Local Government leads a party that promotes privatisation. And a recent discussion paper approved by Cabinet promotes the idea that local government should be scaled back to certain core services. This makes me concerned that a future Auckland Council could try to sell off assets like our water company, transport, ports, even libraries, parks and pools.
I feel Aucklanders should have the final say over an issue this important. Phil Twyford's private members bill would put the final decision on any proposed privatisation firmly into the hands of Aucklanders.
If as my MP you wish to retain my vote in the next election, this is the course you need to follow.
Yours sincerely,
<Your name>
